Ports & Harbours
Slipways, jetties and quaysides often need a winch or capstan
for hauling, mooring or lifting duties during the day-to-day
operation of a port or harbour. North Sea Winches' products
fit neatly into this category, offering the choice of hydraulic
or electric drives. Most port and harbour projects tend to use
electric drive because a normal mains supply is usually freely
available. However in the photo above the smaller downhaul winch
has a hydraulic drive with its own self-contained electro-hycdraulic
power-pack. Note that the wire on the main winch is spooled
neatly without the use of any level wind mechanism. This is
because of the typical slow speed of such a winch coupled with
the long run of wire which minimises the fleet angle. Ports
which handle large vessels such as ferries and cargo ships of
ten use electric mooring capstans on the quayside to haul in
the mooring ropes so they can be anchored on bollards. North
Sea Winches offers a variety of designs to suit the application.
The dalek style capstan pictured above is typical of the ones
favoured by Dover Harbour and Humber International Terminal
at Immingham.
Health and safety
considerations are forcing many fishing harbours to employ
the use of landing davits for landing boxes of fish. Once
again we can offer electric or hydraulic davits to
suit the customers' specific requirements. |
